Understanding of “Coherence” In my understanding, coherence in computer-mediated conversation (CMC) is a logical, consistent, and orderly flow of conversations in electronic environments. Herring (1999) identified two major problems that could cause incoherence in CMC: lack of simultaneous feedback and disrupted turn adjacency. Herring demonstrated the problems by using examples from synchronous CMC.
